Tens of thousands of India’s poorest people are on a monthlong march to Delhi to demand the government provide land for the country’s dispossessed.
Euronews reports that the protest set out from Gwalior in Madya Pradesh and will cover 350 kilometres to the capital.
According to the United Nations 170 million Indians live in slums under threat of displacement, harassment and arrest.
They plan to reach Delhi on October 27 and hold talks with the central government to seek a framework for the national land reforms policy. By then the numbers marching are expected to have swelled to 100,000.
The Ekta Parishad, which organised the march, has requested the government allocate land for the poor to build a shack or pitch a tent.
They also advocate the handing over of land already occupied by slum dwellers to the poor to end the shelter insecurity.
